What an awesome trip this was! I’ve been to Jeju once beforehand, but hadn’t experienced it like this! On our first day shortly after arriving bright and early to Jeju-do we went to the Haenyeo museum were we had a lecture and free time to look around. I’d always known of the female divers, but never was educated on what exactly they did- I just knew they were famous for being female divers. However after the lecture, I was able to get an understanding on how the Haenyeo culture is and how they contribute to society.
The most exciting and tiring part was the actual Haenyeo diving experience. We were all quite pumped and ready to go, but the overall gear we had to put on for it was a killer! The sun was rough that day! However it was all okay once we got into the water. It was really cool to be actually with some of these women and have them help me practice my diving skills. Although, at first I was completely frightened of the water- once I got my bearings I felt alot more comfortable! At the end of the experience, I can say I have the upmost respect for these women!
Our dinner later that day was a bit out of my comfort zone, as I’m not so used to eating shellfish, however I did my best to go out and try something new!
The second day was jam packed and super fun! The 4D movie at the World Natural Heritage Site was really cool! Although the weather was quite humid, the hike up Geomun Oreum was completely worth it once we saw the scenery up top! Ending our trip in the Lava Tubes was a really great way to cool down from all the humidity 🙂
Overall, the trip was great! Thank you UNESCO KOREA for letting me take part in this!
